Italians vs. Americans

by Claire on January 10, 2010

Picture yourself standing in a bar or a restaurant.  If you are by yourself, what are you doing?  Do you feel uncomfortable because you are not talking to anyone?  Do you reach for your mobile device and start texting or searching the Internet?

I have found myself in many situations where I am not comfortable because I am by myself or I am not in a conversation with a large group of people.  This is a product of our culture in America.  We have been taught we need to constantly be doing something to fit in or not be seen as a “loser.”

I was at a dinner party for my old job with a mixture from the American office and the Italian office.  I was watching as the Americans were constantly trying to listen in or jump into conversations, I have to admit I was one of them, while many of the Italians were comfortable sitting at a table observing everyone else.  I was joking with a collegue from Italy regarding this matter and he gave me some insightful information.

Matteo told me that in Italy people never feel the need to fit in with their surroundings.  They are comfortable sitting in a crowded area with nothing but their thoughts.  He said he has found in his travels that our culture is the only one that promotes constantly doing something rather than nothing.

After speaking with Matteo I have found myself often thinking about his words.  I find when I am waiting for someone or in a large group I can step back and relax.  I don’t have a need to grab my iPhone and look busy or make some witty comment to get in on a conversation.  I am confident I am not a loser, most of the time!

Not a PR Person…

November 10, 2009

I was recently told I am not a “PR person.”  What makes a PR person?  How can someone that doesn’t know me determine by looking at a piece of paper if I am a PR person?  I realize first impressions are very important, but I am not sure if I agree with a statement that [...]

It was about a couple that had been deaf all their life and they were going in to have cochlear implants, a surgery that helps to develop the sense of hearing. Throughout the movie you watch this couple get excited about hearing the [...]

Fragrances are Forever

October 19, 2009

Remember back to when you were a child.  Can you remember the smell of your mother as she hugs you good night?  Can you smell the summer winds after a midday shower?  Remember the scent of your comforter as it protected you from the evening thunder storms. Close your eyes tight and remember all of the [...]

Street 1

The sun is shining over the tops of the buildings creating a blanket of warmth for the City.  It’s a new day with new possibilities while the children run up the street to school and the people emerge from the buildings off to jobs.  All around the world people experience autumn, but nobody experiences autumn [...]

Trapeze 1

I was standing with my feet over the edge looking down at my in-laws.  To the left of me was the West Side Highway with cars speeding past, in front was a view of the Financial District and to the left was the Hudson River.  As I looked at the bar in front of my [...]

What If?

September 30, 2009

The world always has to change, that is the way of life.  People make decisions that change their entire path everyday. Have you ever pondered, “What if I hadn’t gotten on that train?”  “What if I hadn’t said that?” It is easy to always think about the “what if”, but it is always healthier to [...]
